Lowering springs and coilovers both lower a Civic, but they are not interchangeable solutions. A spring changes the spring component while leaving the factory damper in place. Eibach lists Pro-Kit applications for both the FK8 and FL5 and says the FL5 application was tested with factory dampers. That does not make every spring automatically compatible or comfortable, but it shows why a properly matched spring can be a legitimate alternative to a full coilover.
Coilovers make sense when you have a reason to adjust the car. Maybe the car needs a different ride height for another wheel/tire package. Maybe you want to tune damping for weekend driving. Maybe you are building toward regular track use and need more control over the suspension package.
The important phrase is have a reason. Buying coilovers simply because they sound more serious can turn a good Civic into a harsher one. If the roads are poor, a high spring rate and short ride height can consume useful travel and make the tire less settled over sharp bumps.
